Red Velvet Birthday Cake

with a big family there are lots of birthday cakes to make and lucky I love making birthday cakes.  my Mum has always wanted a red velvet cake and with my new recipe book I had a recipe to try :)..

after making the cake (and I followed the recipe exactly considering this was the first time making a red velvet cake and I had no idea what to expect) it was the softest cake I had ever felt.  I froze the cakes (I always find it easier to ice a hard cake rather than a soft cake and it also helps the cake to remain fresh for longer)

after making raspberry jam for the lamington cake I thought I may as well make it for the red velvet cake too rather than buying jam.  I used up all my raspberries that I had grown for the lamington cake so I bought some frozen raspberries and made jam out of them.. it wasn't as nice as the fresh raspberries that I had grown but it was still better than store bought :D

I also made a beautiful icing that they call ermine buttercream, and it was so delicious that I can't wait to make it again..

so all that was left was to put it all together and to get a nice equal amount of jam, cake and buttercream

so I did circles of jam and buttercream (and I have to admit that the picture in the recipe book looked so good when cut it was too good not to do)

the I covered the outside and piped some details so Mum wouldn't know what kind of cake it was.. also it had to travel 2 hours so it was good that it was relatively intact (minus a few little details on the edges)
and all birthday cakes need a candle :)

Mum was so surprised when it was cut and she loved it... we had so much cake left over I gave some to my sister and grandparents and they all loved it too :)

I have to admit that it was an incredibly delicious cake and I can't wait to try it again :D

Genoise Sponge

for Hubby's birthday I decided to try a new cake recipe from a cookbook on the shelf plus I had seen it being made on the Great British Bake Off.. and I had some cute little heart shaped tins that I hadn't used before so I thought I could used them...

so I added a little red dye to the mixture, and a little more each time and ended up with this:

I made some lemon cream cheese icing (hubby loves lemon) and iced the cakes (I had made 2 of each cake)

this one I thought had way too much icing on and didn't look very neat

but I liked how nice this one look :)

in the end it was a lovely tasting cake (even the one with too much icing) and its definitely a recipe to try again in the future

Tomato Harvest 2

seeing way too many tomatoes on the bush I decided it was time to pick some more..

another 1.675 kgs of tomatoes :D getting excited

Chocolate Cherry Tomatoes

I was a little surprised to look out in the garden and see some ripe tomatoes..

and then I realise that there are some chocolate cherry tomatoes on the bush growing :D

and there were even some to pick :D

considering I didn't plant any of the tomato plants I'm just excited to have tomatoes

Mini Brioche

I got a cook book for Christmas and have been busy testing out some of the recipes.. I tried out the
brioche recipe but made small ones instead of big ones :)

they were so yummy they were gobbled up pretty quickly :) not a bad effort for being gluten free

Cadbury Turns 2

Cadbury turned 2 earlier in the month and it's amazing how much better she has been and how much she has grown up.

so she got a new bucket for her toys for inside (we were using an old box that she occasionally would nibble on when retrieving a toy :P ), and a few new toys and balls..

she doesn't normally get many soft toys because I end up picking up all the fluff

it was interesting how big she is getting she can reach our table

Cadbury had left just the tennis balls :P

and that night she got special puppy cuddles in bed (which don't happen very often)

most of the balls have been chewed up into a million pieces thanks to Cadbury and the stuffed toys have been relieved of their fluff :)

Watermelon

my watermelon plant has gone absolutely wild

and I was sure that there weren't any watermelon  growing like last time I tried to grow watermelons, but it was lucky that my sister found a little watermelon growing behind the fence that I had no idea was even there

little watermelons are so cute... well after I found this one I was determined that it wasn't going to be the only one... so I went around fertilising as many flowers as I could

you can see in the photo above that there is a male and female flower (the female flower has what looks like a small watermelon) and I do the same as I do with the pumpkins and zucchinis and break off the male flowers and fertilise the female flowers :)

after doing this I found 2 more watermelons much smaller than the first one.  one was growing on Cadbury's side of the fence and the other on the inside of the veggie patch.. as they got bigger I wondered if Cadbury would do anything but left it be for ages.

I came home one day to find that Cadbury had found a ball

the naughty little watermelon thief stole it right off the vine.  she was so proud of herself too.  so I made sure all the watermelons growing were tucked safely in the veggie box and no more will grow on her side of the fence.  I shouldn't be surprised either but I just thought she would leave it be after it had been left the whole time..

Oh well it did give me the opportunity to see what the inside of the watermelon looks like on the inside, if it starts with a small amount of pink or if its all white

so there you go if you ever wondered now you can see the flesh is white until it ripens :)

hopefully I can keep the other watermelons safe until the end of the season :)
